Tasks: The position is part of the Swedish Research School on Natural Disaster Mitigation (SENDIM, www.cnds.se) and the subproject has a specific focus on crisis communication in the management of natural disasters. The project has a focus on organizations’ ability to detect, prevent or mitigate the severity of natural disasters. The objective is to probe the limits and possibilities of early warning and the inter-organizational coordination required for it. Comparative studies on the different types of natural events and their range of outcomes may enhance our understanding of the key factors which play a significant role and help identify best practices. A strengthening of society’s crisis preparedness also requires more research on public perceptions and reactions to natural disasters. People have different perceptions of threats and risks, which affect society’s preparedness, and therefore more research is required on the underlying driving forces.

The candidate is expected to interact with colleagues within CNDS, which is a new multi-disciplinary collaboration between geo sciences, social sciences and engineering sciences. The position involves other departmental duties, usually teaching, although to a limited extent (maximum 20%). The salary level is set by the university regulations.

Postdoc Position ACTIVATION OF CELLULAR DETOXIFICATION PATHWAYS

The researcher will work on the structural features that determine the ability of chemicals to activate cellular detoxification pathways mediated by the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). INIA (Institute for Agricultural and Food Research and Technology, Madrid).

Program Description

INIA is an autonomous Public Research Organization (OPI) belonging to the Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN) in Spain. The INIA is responsible for the management and coordination of agrifood R&D programs at the national level, as well as of the execution of its own research programs, within the National R&D programs at the national R&D&i Plan or others. At the INIA, the activity of the Department of Environment focuses, among others areas, on Ecotoxicology and Environmental/Ecological Risk Assessment of potentially polluting activities. One important part of the work of the Department consists in the scientific support to the activities of different ministries (Ministry for Environmental and Marine and Rural Affairs). In the Department of Environment, the group EDTC (Endocrine Disruption and Toxicity of Contaminants) is interested in the particular mechanisms by which some toxics cause specific toxicity. The main tools used by the group are based on in vitro culture of some fish cells and cell lines. The knowledge obtained in the laboratory is applied to the detection of contaminants in the field and to the environmental risk assessment of chemicals.

Job description:

Although it has been assumed that AhR activators share some structural features (they show planar, polycyclic, polyaromatic molecules) in the last years it has been observed that AhR can be activated by a number of chemicals with different structural properties probably through alternative mechanisms than direct ligand-binding. The main objective of this work will be to establish the molecular structural features that determine the ability of chemicals to activate the receptor. For that, the induction of AhR by selected compounds will be studied in cell lines originated from different taxonomic groups, although most of them will be piscine cell lines. The induction of AhR will be evidenced by measuring the expression of dependent genes at the transcriptional level by means of real time PCR. The protein products and related enzyme activities will be also measured. Insights in the mechanism of activation of the AhR will be obtained by co-exposure of the cells with different AhR activators and inhibitors or by using subcellular fractions (S9) to observe metabolism. The molecular structural features of chemicals will be studied by means of ab initio computational calculations and the values of the different descriptors will be related with the results obtained in vitro using different approaches, from simple mathematical models to even neural networks.

Nurse Midwife Scholarship Program, Virginia Department

To be considered for a Nurse Practitioner/Nurse Midwife Scholarship, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

Residency in Virginia for at least one year.
Acceptance or enrollment as a full time student in a nurse practitioner/nurse midwifery program in the State of Virginia or a nurse midwifery program in a nearby state.
Demonstration of a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 in graduate and/or undergraduate courses.
Have submitted a completed application form, and official grade transcript of graduate and/or undergraduate courses, and a statement of intent to practice as a nurse practitioner/nurse midwife in an undeserved area of Virginia following graduation.
Submission of two reference letters.
Submission of all materials to the Office of Minority Health and Public Health Policy prior to the established deadline.

Failure to comply with any of the above will cause the applicant to be ineligible for a nurse practitioner/nurse midwife scholarship. Applicants will be graded and ranked by the scholarship committee, and the most qualified candidates will be awarded the scholarships.

Conditions of Scholarships :

It is important that all applicants fully understand the conditions of accepting a Nurse Practitioner/Nurse Midwife Scholarship. These awards are not gifts. Student recipients must agree to engage in full time practice in a designated medically underserved area for a period of years equal to the number of annual scholarships received. The scholarship recipient may pre select a medically underserved area where service employment will take place at any time prior to entering practice. This selection may be altered 90 days prior to beginning practice, at which time the recipient must choose from the current list of medically underserved areas and must receive approval from the State Health Commissioner or his designee of the practice location. The practice facility must provide services to persons who are unable to pay for the service and must participate in all government sponsored insurance programs designed to assure access to medical care service for covered persons.

Therefore, if a student received a one year scholarship award he must repay that amount by working continuously in Virginia for one (1) year. Full time employment must begin within two (2) years of the recipient’s graduation date from the program. Voluntary military service, even if stationed in Virginia, cannot be used to repay scholarship awards.

Before any scholarship is awarded, the applicant must sign a written contract agreeing to these terms as established by law and the Board of Health.

Penalty:

If, for any reason, a scholarship recipient fails to complete his studies or to engage in full time nurse practitioner/nurse midwife practice in Virginia in an approved area and employment setting, the full amount of money represented in the scholarship(s) received, plus an annual interest charge, as established by the Commonwealth of Virginia, must be repaid immediately.

The recipient must take the first scheduled licensing examination following graduation. If he does not pass, he may retake the next scheduled examination. If he does not pass the second examination, he must repay all scholarship money received, plus an annual interest charge, as stated above.

If a recipient leaves Virginia or ceases to engage in full time practice as a nurse practitioner/nurse midwife before all employment conditions of the scholarship award are fulfilled, the recipient must repay the balance on his account, plus a penalty and an annual interest charge, as established by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Number of Applications Per Student :

Scholarships are awarded for single academic years. However, a recipient may, after demonstrating satisfactory progress in his/her studies, apply for and receive a scholarship award for a succeeding academic year. No student may receive a scholarship for more than a total of two years.

Developing Countries Partnership Scholarship (DCPS) or Beasiswa Kemitraan Negara Berkembang (KNB)

The Tenth Conference of Heads of States of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) countries held on 1-6 September 1992 concluded among others the idea of providing scholarships by the Ministry of Education and Culture, which is now the Ministry of National Education (MONE). The scholarship is aimed to strengthen the relationship and mutual cooperation among the members of NAM countries, to reciprocate scholarship programs provided by other countries for Indonesian citizens, and to provide stronger cultural links between these nations.

In 1993 the Government of the Republic of Indonesian started to offer postgraduate (master degree) scholarships to students from the NAM member countries.

However, since 2002, after the cold war ended, the scholarship has been offered to citizens of other developing countries such as Thailand, Fiji, South Korea, Suriname, Guyana, Turkey, Vietnam, Vanuatu and attracted more applicants. Over the years up to 2005, 243 students from 36 countries have completed the NAM scholarship program.

Considering that the international political development has made the use of the term “NAM” irrelevant, this scholarship program has been renamed Developing Countries Partnership Scholarship (DCPS) or Beasiswa Kemitraan Negara Berkembang (KNB).

Research in the framework of the graduate program should be carried out in Indonesia.

Should the research be carried in the respective home country, all the cost will be borne by the respective student.

SCHOLARSHIP COVERAGE

Financial assistance

- Settlement Allowance will be given upon arrival in Indonesia
- While taking the Indonesian language course and preparatory programs, a student will receive Rp. 1.500.000,-/month (cost of living only).
- During their Master Programs in Indonesia, the students will get :
- Cost of Living (net, monthly) = Rp. 1.500.000,-
- Research Allowance (monthly) = Rp. 400.000,-
(to be given at the beginning of the third semester)
- Books (net, monthly) = Rp. 350.000,-
- The scholarship will be provided by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia for 36 months.
- A round-trip international airfare (economic class) from the international airport of the students’ home countries to Indonesia, including local transport to the host university.

Health insurance

The students are eligible for health check up at a public health center referred to by the host university

Health insurance given to the students is based on the recommended doctor’s statement. Should students see specialists including dentists, eye specialists and maternity specialists, they should bear all the cost.

REQUIREMENTS

- The maximum age is 35 years
- Copies of the diploma and academic transcripts (translated into English) for bachelor degree holders
- A TOEFL score of 450 or equivalent (the certificate being attached)
- A Health certificate from recognized medical doctors in the respective home countries

Students Do not Know Enough About College Applications, Says Expert

COLUMBIA, SC _ These are busy day for Amanda Loveday - Consultants for university admission policy at the University of South Carolina campus of Columbia.

The phone is ringing constantly in his small office, and students and their parents with questions - many questions.

The application of the university, not a simple process, it has an expensive, confusing journey. There are filing fees, taxes, writing standardized tests, attendance at a school travel, deadlines, essays, get advice and support at the federal and resident fill forms.

"The application of the university is like searching for a job," said Loveday. "It is very expensive, but worth it."

The deadline for the application of the students and the USC College of Charleston and hope for a decision of the Board of Admission in December was on 15 October. But many other universities are so-called "early decision" periods in November and December.

The first question usually increases the probability of an exhibition of students and get the help of the campus.

Apply for regular admission deadlines vary greatly.

USC is the 1st time December, but uses the school to accept a space-available basis after that date.

The College of Charleston The deadline is 1 February. In addition, the candidates take on a space available basis after that date.

Social program is a scholarship program for women scientists to begin by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

This scheme for women scientists and engineers, "in my career," a break for social responsibility, desire to return to mainstream science, working as a bench-top scientists.

Technology applications for scientific and social benefits need to develop their own research and recommendations you wish to apply for this scheme women scientists.

Aim

1. Female scientists need to stop re-introduced after an active career in research, S & T's regular R & D people in urban and rural areas and unorganized project provides an opportunity to support our focus on the needs of
Two. Related to the program on the social problems of women S & T provides an opportunity for capacity building.

Proposed project

1. To improve the quality of life and adaptive technology research and development in rural areas and urban slums, providing additional opportunities for income generation.
Two. Adaptive and innovative technology, transfer and development of ground-level laboratory.
Three. Ability of the candidates in the field of technology meets the needs of rural areas.

Types of support:

1. Doctoral scholarship, skills meters. MS / s, MD and graduate candidates per month 10 000 rupees for two years and volunteers every month to support a grant of Rs 15 million two-year period.
Two. If the overhead of travel, a small device that is deemed necessary under the plan, supplies, subsidies for contingencies.

2010 scholarship program for women scientists:

Not fixed and the position of Indian nationals living in India, with one of the following qualifications:

1. Doctor and Master of Science degree.
Two. License / Engineering, Massachusetts / technology, architecture, medical / pharmacy.
Three. Who are poor enough to interrupt his career, received at least three years.
Four. Age 50 and under at the time of application?
Five. Candidates, the selection of the winners of the scholarship (doctorate program, a high degree, and is not registered) is during the fair.
Six. Scholarships may not be considered stable job and candidates.

Other requirements of the 2010 Women in Science Award:

1. Regardless of proposed projects must show active involvement in the field of project implementation agency and, if the candidate's education and R & D and the other is attached to the body. Need a letter to that effect to the field office.
Two. The expansion of infrastructure or project management support, the statement from the host institution must be attached to the application. Similarly, my project also requires the agency agreement between us in this, the certificate of the zone.
Three. Need to, humans and animals, ICMR as the proposed clinical trials required for approval of the following ethical / CPCSEA guidelines should include the investigation.

Duration of scholarship:

Women Scientists Scholarship 2010 will be a period of two years earlier. Five month period, three in the second year as an exceptional case, penodic during the trial was postponed recommended by experts. Mechanism of selection: that is to open the panel of experts involved in the selection process. Orocess both levels of selection, after the initial screening and selection of candidates, to be adopted by individual groups of experts for presentation. There are many colleges and universities which offer Girl Scout Scholarships, but are college specific; meaning you must attend that particular college to receive their unknown scholarship for Girl scouts. The best course of action to secure a Girl scout scholarship if you are interested in attending a particular college or university is to call their financial aids office and ask them if they offer scholarships for Girl scouts which you can apply to.

If your a senior still attending high school, speak to your personal counselor about their knowledge of Girl scouts scholarships that you can look into. Keep in mind that you may be able to uncover more then they do by contacting individual colleges and universities on your own. Many colleges may have scholarships not specifically labeled as a Girl scout scholarship, but it may fall under the umbrella of a high achiever award that you can apply to and receive scholarship money. Remember, colleges love high achievers; which being a Girl scout clearly has exhibited, and they will go out of their way to find some sort of scholarship for a high achieveing Girl scout because they value these types of students & want them attending their school.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards
This is the largest youth recognition program in the US today and is exclusively based on volunteer community service. Any young person who is in grades 5-12 can apply. (10) National Honorees are chosen by a panel of prominent public figures and awarded a $5,000 Scout scholarship. Local Honorees (2 from each state – one from a middle level school and one from a high school) are selected from each state and receive $1,000 in scholarships. Also, winners receive an all paid expense trip with a parent/guardian to Washington, D.C. for the national recognition presentation for all winners. The Eastern Orthodox Committee on Scouting Scholarship
The winners of these Girl scouting scholarships will have exhibited their participation in their Scouting, school, and community, scholastic achievements and church. To be eligible, candidates must be a registered active member of Girl Scouts and having earned a Girl Scout Gold Award, a member of an Eastern Orthodox Church and have received the Alpha Omega Religious Scout Award. Must be presently attending an accredited high school as a senior. The Eastern Orthodox Scouting Scholarship Committee awards (2) scholarships. First place winners receive $1,000 & runner up $500. You must be officially committed in attending a (4) year accredited college/university of your choice. Just recently the Russian Children’s Welfare Society, Inc, has included a scholarship for $1,000 for a Scout who is Russian descent & qualifies with the above criteria. Three national scholarships for Girl scouts who best meet the qualifications above, will also be given by the Eastern Orthodox Church in addition to the above. Deadline by May 1st of each year. Corinne Jeannine Schillings Foundation Scholarship for Girl Scouts
Winners of these Girl scout scholarships go to women who have earned the Girl Scout Gold or Silver Award and whom will be studying a foreign language. You can renew this scholarship yearly. Also; a separate grant is awarded to a Silver or Gold Award Girl Scout who will be studying overseas with a field of their choosing. This is for airfare only. American Legion Auxiliary Girl Scout Achievement Scholarship
Girl Scout Gold Award recipients only. Active religious member of choice & must have been awarded the Cadet or Senior Scout level. One recommendation letter from one of the following: church, school, community or her Scouting group. Deadline is April 1st. Must write a (500) word essay about your Gold Award project. The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes
Girl scouts are top candidates for these awards which honor young girls who have made a difference in the community through public service. You must be nominated by adults who are not related but who know all about the accomplishments & achievements of the Girl scouts work. Annually, (10) winners nationwide are honored with a $2,000 award for furthering their education or their service work. Every year there has always been one Girl scout amongst the winners. Rising Stars Scholarship for Girl Scouts
If you’re a Girl scout and you love learning about math, then you must apply to this scout scholarship fast. A $2,500 yearly Girl scout scholarship is presented to 1 – 4 applicants. IWC Water Leader Scholarships

The IWC Water Leader Scholarships offer full and partial tuition scholarships for Australian citizens, permanent residents and international applicants for the Master of Integrated Water Management program.

Water Leader Scholarships 2011 will open on 1 May - 1 August.

Master of Integrated Water Management

The Integrated Water Management suite of programs is custom-designed by leading practitioners and academics from a range of disciplines from International WaterCentre (IWC) member universities.

The programs equip students with the integration, leadership, managerial and technical skills to become part of an elite group of water leaders with sustainable and holistic solutions to global water and climate change challenges.

Scholarship value

Australia/NZ citizens and permanent residents

Scholarships include both full-tuition and partial-tuition fees for both full-time and part-time/distance IWC Master of Integrated Water Management program.

International applicants

International scholarships cover full tuition costs of the three-semester full-time Masters program, as well as overseas student health cover for the duration of the program.

The scholarship does not include

Travel, accommodation allowance, field work, living costs. It will be the responsibility of successful applicants to cover these costs.

Entry requirements

A completed four year undergraduate degree in a related field of study from an internationally-recognised institution. You must have completed a university level qualification which is at least equivalent in standard to an Australian four year degree. Citizenship/visa status

You will also be assessed for the Water Leaders Scholarships by a selection panel at the International WaterCentre. Academics

Whether you are applying for a scholarship from a pharmaceutical company or a non-profit organization, most scholarship committees will take into consideration your overall commitment to academics. Even if the scholarship you want does not require a high level of academic achievement, the selection committee may still reasonably be interested in your grades or other indications that you take your studies seriously. After all, you are asking for money to pay for higher education, not a trip to the beach.

For some scholarships committees, academic commitment is translated into a minimum GPA requirement; for others, the breadth and depth of your coursework is more important. If you are already in college at the time of your application, expect a selection committee to consider your GPA; major, minor and course load; academic awards and honors; body of published work; and letters of recommendation from professors and advisors. For high school students, committees will look at your GPA, class rank, number of honors and AP classes, and letters of recommendation from teachers concerning your academic promise.

If you have struggled with your GPA, have not yet declared a major, or do not have a single award to your credit, don’t panic. You do not have to write off scholarship assistance just yet. Not all committees demand - or even care about - honor roll and Dean’s List. For some scholarships, a well-rounded candidate with a lower GPA (even a 2.0, for example) is more appealing than one who aces his exams but doesn’t do anything with his time other than study.

Internship & Work Experience

Scholarship selection committees are interested in seeing how you relate to the world outside the proverbial ivory tower. They are looking first and foremost for initiative and commitment. Do you work a part-time (or full-time) job in addition to your studies? Are you a major breadwinner for your family?

Scholarship committees are less concerned with your job description and earning power than with your ability to demonstrate responsibility. You can do this by presenting strong and compelling letters of reference from your employer and showing a history of commitment to your place of work.
